Denmark to Summon US Envoy
Kenneth A. Howery, the US ambassador in Copenhagen, will be called in for talks after Trump selected Jeff Landry, governor of Louisiana, as Washington’s envoy to Greenland, a news agency reported.
"It is completely unacceptable. That is why I have also decided, in consultation with our Greenlandic colleagues, that we will call in the US ambassador for talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," Lars Lokke Rasmussen told the Danish national broadcaster.
Rasmussen explained that Denmark seeks an explanation for why the US chose to appoint a special envoy to Greenland despite already having an ambassador stationed in Denmark.
Trump has renewed his interest in Greenland since his reelection, citing the island’s strategic position and abundant mineral resources.
He previously characterized acquiring Greenland as an "absolute necessity" for US economic security, likening the idea to a "large real estate deal."
Nevertheless, both Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected the notion of US ownership of the territory, reiterating their opposition to Trump’s repeated proposals.
