Danish FM to summon US ambassador following assigning of special envoy

(MENAFN) Denmark announced on Monday that it will summon the US ambassador to Copenhagen after President Donald Trump appointed a special envoy for Greenland, the autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, according to reports.

The Danish foreign minister confirmed that Kenneth A. Howery, the US ambassador, will be called in for discussions following Trump’s naming of Jeff Landry, governor of Louisiana, as Washington’s special envoy to Greenland. "It is completely unacceptable. That is why I have also decided, in consultation with our Greenlandic colleagues, that we will call in the US ambassador for talks at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs," Lars Lokke Rasmussen told national media.

Rasmussen emphasized that Denmark seeks an explanation for the move, questioning why the US would appoint a special envoy to Greenland despite already maintaining an ambassador in the country.

Trump has renewed his focus on Greenland after his reelection, citing the island’s strategic location and abundant mineral resources. He previously described the potential acquisition of Greenland as an "absolute necessity" for US economic security, likening it to a “large real estate deal.”

However, both Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected the notion of US ownership. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen reiterated the country’s position, stating: "Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders and the United States will not take over Greenland."

She added: "This is of course a matter of principle. No one should be allowed to change national borders by force. Neither politically nor militarily," emphasizing that Denmark will adhere to its democratic values despite the “difficult situation.”
