Preserving territorial integrity of Denmark is "essential" for EU
At a press briefing in Brussels, EU Commission spokesperson Anouar El Anouni declined to comment directly on the US decision but reiterated the EU’s longstanding position. "It is not for me here to comment on US decisions, but what I can say about the EU position is the following, which has been our long-standing position on the matter that preserving the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark, its sovereignty and the inviolability of its borders is essential for the European Union," El Anouni said.
The statement comes after Denmark announced plans to summon Kenneth A. Howery, the US ambassador to Copenhagen, for an explanation following President Donald Trump’s appointment of Jeff Landry, governor of Louisiana, as Washington’s special envoy to Greenland. Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen described the move as "completely unacceptable" and noted that the decision to call in the ambassador was made in consultation with Greenlandic authorities. Denmark is seeking clarity on why the US appointed a special envoy despite already maintaining an ambassador in the country.
Trump has renewed interest in Greenland due to its strategic position and abundant mineral resources, previously describing ownership of the island as an "absolute necessity" for US economic security and comparing it to a “large real estate deal.” However, both Denmark and Greenland have consistently rejected the notion of US ownership, emphasizing that the island remains under Greenlandic control.
