Denmark urges US to stop threats over Greenland
The warnings follow remarks by President Donald Trump, who said, “We do need Greenland, absolutely. We need it for defense,” claiming that Russian and Chinese activity around the island makes it difficult for Copenhagen to manage security. Trump added that Greenland holds strategic importance for US national security and even suggested revisiting plans for American control.
Frederiksen responded firmly: “The US has no right to annex any of the three countries in the Danish Kingdom,” and urged Washington to stop issuing threats against Denmark and its people. She emphasized that Greenland’s authorities have made clear their opposition to any US acquisition.
Trump first floated the idea of purchasing Greenland in 2019, which was immediately rejected by Copenhagen and the island’s government. Since returning to office, he has renewed interest in the proposal, at times hinting at the potential use of force.
Denmark has reacted by bolstering Arctic defenses and expanding both military and civilian monitoring, viewing US pressure as a direct challenge to its sovereignty. Trump later downplayed Copenhagen’s security efforts, saying, “You know what Denmark did basically, to boost up security in Greenland? They added one more dog sled,” while warning that the island is “surrounded by Russian and Chinese ships.” He reiterated that Greenland is critical to US and European security, noting, “let’s talk about Greenland in 20 days.”
Tensions have escalated in recent weeks. In December, Trump appointed Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, who supports incorporating Greenland into the US, as a special envoy, prompting Denmark to summon the American ambassador for clarification. Following the US military operation in Venezuela, a former Trump official hinted on social media that Washington may soon act on Greenland.
